Consignment Sales: A Great Source for Recycling Children’s Items

Why not give those sweet little overalls and sweaters a second life?

Why not give those sweet little overalls and sweaters a second life?

One of the absolute best ways to recycle is to reuse clothing. And it doesn’t just have to be you who benefits; you can buy and sell clothing and gear for your children, too.

In fact, Nashville is home to a growing number of consignment and thrift shops that sell children’s clothing. And every spring, a number of local organizations and churches sponsor special consignment sales. They typically offer gently used dress and play clothes, shoes, strollers, toys, books, videos and DVDs, nursery and children’s furniture and maternity clothes.

I’m a big fan of the consignment sale for buying and selling clothes for my son, who’s almost three. Like all children, he grows so fast that he outgrows many of his clothes and shoes long before they’re worn out. Why not give those sweet little overalls and sweaters a second life? That’s particularly true for dressy clothes that don’t get worn much at all. I’ve picked up a bunch of church outfits at consignment sales, paying a fraction of the original cost for items that look brand new. And when we’re finished with them, hopefully some other little boy will look just as darling in them.

Some of the upcoming sales on the calendar for the Nashville area include:

Hannalooms (Janie’s Antique Mall): March 4-7
WeeWares (15115 Old Hickory Blvd.): March 5-8
Brentwood United Methodist Church (309 Franklin Road): March 6-7
Otter Creek Kids (Otter Creek Church, 409 Franklin Road): March 6-7
Hands Me Ups (Tennessee State Fairgrounds): March 12-14
Flood of Duds (Hendersonville First United Methodist Church, 217 East Main Street): March 12-14
KidBargains (Forest Hills Baptist Church, 2101 Old Hickory Blvd.): March 27-28

Many of the multi-day sales have half-price specials on the final day.

So grab a couple of reusable tote bags and check one out. You might just score a great bargain. And next time, think about selling some of the old clothes, toys and baby gear that are taking up all the room in your attic and garage.
