Coffee Plants

Coffee Plants

Dump out old coffee grounds with the kids!

In our composting series, we have talked at great lengths about ways to turn trash (old food) into treasure (fresh compost). Maybe you're not quite ready to have a heap of food decomposing in your backyard. If that's the case, try the very small step of dumping used coffee grounds near your plants. These grounds can be a great addition to any plant. These grounds will bring much-needed nitrogen to your plants and keep them out of our landfills. Have your little one sprinkle those used grounds near each plant in the back yard or directly into potted plants.

A friend of mine just turned me onto this and I have been trying to get hubby to go along with it (he's the one that makes coffee, lol). SHe says she's been doing it for at least 10 yrs and her flowers are beautiful!!!!

One reader writes, "I did this, just this very morning! Coffee grounds are acid, though, and shouldn't be used directly on/near lime-loving (low ph) plants. But boy do azaleas, rhodies, blueberries, etc. just love it. Mostly I put the grounds in the compost, and add a bit of lime from time to time to keep the compost balanced...but the grounds go directly on my blueberries!" Thanks!
